Tacticus Tournament Arena guide: bid Epic against a Common bidder and still bank 10 points

Retreating from a lost match costs you more than losing it. Here's how I bid, spend tickets and claw points back in Tacticus's live PvP event.

Tournament Arena in Warhammer 40,000: Tacticus punishes bad decisions before a single bolter fires. Your rarity bid decides what a win pays, while the lower of the two bids decides what actually gets played. Get that gap straight and the rest of the mode makes sense.

Your bid sets the payout, the lower bid sets the fight

PvP is part of the official pitch, and this is its time-limited live form: up to five characters from any mix of factions, a live human opponent rather than an AI, and a Power Level 6 gate. Both players bid a rarity, the match runs at the lower bid, and each of you scores from your own. A ranked win is worth 7 on Common, 8 on Uncommon, 9 on Rare, 10 on Epic and 11 on Legendary, the last of those biddable since December 2025.

The PvP arena screen in Warhammer 40,000: Tacticus, where players queue for live player-versus-player matches.

So an Epic bidder paired with a Common bidder plays a Common fight and still banks 10 for a win. That's why I bid the highest rarity where I have five characters I'd trust, and not one step higher. Eligibility has a floor too: Iron I to deploy at Uncommon, Bronze I for Rare, Silver I for Epic. Gear won't paper over a thin bench, because anything above the rarity cap has its stats adjusted down to it.

Before settling on a five, check the tier list, then read the actual kits on the heroes pages.

Forty-one fights is the ceiling, so stop wasting tickets

You start with 6 tickets of a possible 12, and each new one takes 2 hours to arrive. The refresh shuts off for the last 8 hours of the event. Whatever you do, ranked fights top out at 41 per event. Events now run 80 hours, a long way from the 48-hour first live tournament in August 2022.

12 is the cap, so don't let the bar sit full while you're busy elsewhere.

Crates arrive at score thresholds and hold Energy and Calandis shards, and a leaderboard crate lands when the event closes. Ties on the leaderboard go to Damage Dealt minus Damage Received, so damage taken matters if you're fighting for a placing.

Casual matches are unlimited and pay nothing towards score or missions, though they do earn Battle Pass points. Use them to test a line-up before you put a ticket on it.

Never retreat from a lost match

Here's the rule I'd paint on every Rhino. The loser keeps whatever Victory Points they scored (0 to 4), and the rest flows into a Redemption Pool: the win value of your bid, minus 1, minus what you scored. Lose an Epic bid with 2 VP and 7 points land in the pool.

Retreat and you add nothing. Disconnects and crashes count as retreats, so if you're playing on a train with one bar of signal, you're gambling those points on the next tunnel. Sulking costs you as well: if both players pass five times without moving a character, the game ends and the first to pass loses.

Redemption matches let you win that pool back, and they've counted towards mission objectives since April 2024. The first two, every 12 hours, cost an ad each, within the daily ad limit, and reset at 00:00 and 12:00 UTC. After that it's Blackstone, starting at 25 and rising. I take every ad and pay nothing. Blackstone only makes sense if a leaderboard crate is genuinely within reach on the final day.

Five points, but each ruleset gets there differently

First to 5 Victory Points wins on the spot. Each enemy character defeated gives one; summons give none, and a resurrected character can't be farmed for a second. The ruleset changes the rest:

  • Power-Ups: power-ups are placed around the map, so I'd lean towards characters that can reach them.
  • Draft Power-Ups: you select 7 characters before the match, so pick flexibility over raw damage.
  • Infested Power-Ups: hostile Tyranids spawn at the end of each player's turn. Killing them scores nothing, and if they kill one of yours, your opponent gets a point.
  • Faction War: you choose a faction rather than individual characters, and any you lack are supplied at Common rarity. Using a faction where you hold all 5 characters earns a +2.

Faction War rosters move. In October 2026 Kimm replaced Sy-Gex in Leagues of Votann, so recheck your faction before you commit. The events calendar is the place to catch the next window.

Going first is not the free hit it looks like

Armour of Contempt gives every character of the player going second a 100k Health shield, lost when that player's turn starts. An opening alpha strike mostly bounces off a wall that was about to vanish anyway. Spend turn one on position.

Placement deserves thought too. Starting spots follow the order you selected your characters, you can't place them by hand, and deployment positions can change between matches. From round 8 the battlefield is bombarded from the outer rows inward, one row each round, so a turtle on the board edge has an expiry date.

Set your selection order before you queue, because that's your deployment. And if you'd rather skip live PvP entirely, you can: it's optional, and nothing here penalises you for skipping it.

I was painting Space Marines long before I ever pulled one, so Tacticus was always going to get me. Age of Magic scratches the same itch: a grid, a turn order and a decision about who moves first. I judge units by what they do to a fight, not by what their stat line promises. Spotted a mistake? hello@gatchanews.com
